When I first got into ferret breeding in 2005 I admit I thought I knew what I was doing. Well, I knew how to take care of the jill, how to take care of the babies, complications, etc. What it took me a long time to learn was so many of the so called "experts" knew very little or didn't care about improving the breed. I foolishly trusted a lot of faulty information about genetics..
After seeing the early deaths of young ferrets from specific bloodlines and the breeders of these lines continuing to perpetuate these lines, my eyes were finally opened.
What has been so frustrating is the lack of concern by breeders to answer questions after they have sold the ferrets. New buyers have no way of knowing the health problems a BRM carries.
This is why from now on, I am breeding only sables. I think it is very sad that the people who REALLY have the knowledge about ferrets are somehow on the bad list of the largest ferret association in the USA.
I would like to acknowledge Joan Clague and Nancy Park for their encouragement, friendship and understanding.
